1 hour agoThe Conservatives defeat at the polls in Tiverton Honiton and Wakefield is the first time in more than 30 years that a government has lost. Wakefield in West Yorkshire was part of Labours red wall which crumbled to the Conservatives in the 2019 general.

Wakefield is a constituency in the West Yorkshire region. The election is due to be held on 23 June. Wakefield and Tiverton and Honiton both Conservative-held have come under serious threat from Labour and the Liberal Democrats respectively.

The Conservatives won Wakefield from Labour at the 2019 general election the first time the seat had elected a Tory since 1931. Fifteen candidates have been confirmed to stand for election in Wakefield after former Conservative MP Imran Ahmad Khan resigned. But a by-election was called after the resignation of Conservative Imran Ahmad Khan.

Sir Keir Starmer can lead Labour to a big by-election win if the odds are to be believed. In 2011 the population of Wakefield was 329800 and in 10 years the population grew by around 4000. On May 3 the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak appointed Khan to be Steward and Bailiff of the Three Hundreds of Chiltern which is a formal mechanism for an MP.
